reverancepavaneOn the face of it Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series is a silly dungeon fantasy crawl starring the titular Carl (and his delicious tootsies [sorry the AI gets everywhere]) and his girlfriend's cat Princess Donut. Aliens arrive on Earth and flatten every building (and everyone under a roof) and offer the survivors to compete in a competition where they have to make their way through a world-sized dungeon.
Sounds particularly silly, right? Why would aliens create such a thing just to harvest Earth's resources? Do they really make it back on the galactic entertainment network? Just over-the-top and silly, really. Something a more serious reader would avoid as comedic fluff.
Well the eighth book, A Parade of Horribles has just been released, and it confirms a lot of the hints that have been dropped in the previous books as the surviving crawlers effectively have declared war on the Dungeon. It appears that the myths and legends of the Dungeon aren't so fictional as most of the Galactic civilization had assumed. And the nature of the cosmic forces that they have really been playing with all this time.
Apparently we have two more books to resolve this situation. It's going to be a fun ride.
I am also told the audiobooks are quite well done.
