The global affairs editor for the national Australian broadcaster, was heard to utter "I think we have seen a real crossing of the Rubicon ... to use an American [emphasis mine] reference over the last 72 hours..." whilst being "interviewed" by one of her reporters on the News about Trump at Davos.

Alea iacta est.

Since I am recommending artistic stuff, here is a solo performance by Wing, one of the musicians in the Korean beatbox/acapella group Beatpella House. Amazing isn't it.

Bohemian Rhapsody.

I definitely enjoyed their performance of Gotye's Somebody I used to Know. Both the video and the stage performance at World of Dance 2024.

Seems quite fun so far. The mythology is fairly accurate too. Although like most K-Drama it can get a bit brutal, especially given the nature of one of the protagonists.

Quite enjoying this show. Be warned that it is set in 1970, at the height of the Third Republic of Korea, which was pretty much a dictatorship in all but name (having overthrown the overtly military dictatorship of the Second Republic of Korea just six years previously), where there was pretty effective suppression of dissent by the internal security apparatus. And the show is heavily involved in the security apparatus. And being a Korean show, it does not hesitate to show this with it's customary brutality (which as typical pulls no punches in the portrayal of bad stuff).

[For those unfamiliar with modern Korean history, in three years the Third Republic would formally become the officially recognised dictatorship of the Fourth Republic (supported by the large industrial conglomerates [chaebol]), until this was eventually overthrown by the bloody Gwangju Uprising after Park's death, and the creation of the Fifth Republic in 1980. Although struggles to enact a proper democracy in South Korea continued until the creation of the current Sixth Republic after the 1987 June Democratic Struggle (which eliminated a lot of the political control of the chaebol). And even so there was Yoon's recent attempt in 2024 at emulating Parks' 1972 successful self-coup with his martial law declaration. Which was why the attempt was so ... fraught.]

In other shows I am quite enjoying Plur1bus, although the protagonist does strike me firstly as being very American, but later I suspect this is really just her innate bitterness (unhelped by the fact that the incident did cost her the only person in the world who could pretty much put up with her in the first place). As for the rest of the show - well done so far.

I did find The War Between Land and Sea to be more of a Russell T Davies mess than is even normal for him.

And of course, Fallout continues to please.

Got a new record for my blood pressure: 69/52. [And I am not a short person.]

Two litres of IV fluids later ... "I suppose you can go home."

Not sure whether it is actually advisable to go see The Midnight Mares at the Grace. Still, it's not music you can really dance to...

Lord of Mysteries is an occult horror mystery set in a pseudo-Steampunk world with very deep lore. And yes it is a donghia (Chinese anime) for those purists reading this. The lore is great, the story excellent, and the characters are great. And the animation is superb. Highly recommended. Season 2 is out in 2027.

Other anime I enjoyed this season included Clevatess, a very old school fantasy anime both in terms of animation and story (and a fantasy not drawn from the standard elf-game derived anime tropes), Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra, which had cheap animation, nice dialogue and characters, and was an interesting variation on the isekai trope, and the second season of Dandadan continues to be as crazy as ever.

Milky Subway is 12 short episodes that is quite fun. [Only viewable from YouTube.]

I do like the Villainess subgenre. Probably due to the general competency porn of protagonist.

Attended my first (and sadly only) Fringe show for this year, An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music by Xani, a talented violinist from Melbourne who I first encountered in a much earlier Fringe as part of The Twoks. She is renowned for looping her music digitally, building up musical soundscapes just using her violin. Occasionally, as in this case, she is joined by a drummer to add percussion.

This concert (and the album) is based on a set of podcasts she did whilst trapped in Covid lockdown. Each featured a different style of electronic dance music (the distinctions between the various types is something that, like the distinctions in jazz or heavy metal, is pretty much lost on me).

I was joined at this show by the most excellent Dalmeny. Sadly whilst there was a dance floor cleared but I was unable to indulge. [I last danced to her music at a small gig where I was about twice as old as most of the other attendees.]

Xani is off to Tailinn next month to play in their International Music Week. She was collecting funds to send her to Estonia, but I only donated to the fund to bring her back afterwards.

As an addenda was saddened to discover that Róisín Murphy played at Womadelaide on Saturday night. This is the second time I missed seeing her live by finding out after her tour finished (I would definitely of headed across to Melbourne or Perth to watch Moloko live). Apparently it was a most excellent show. Oh well. I probably wouldn't have survived Womadelaide.

OK, so I'm a romantic at heart, but I am really enjoying Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon.

One of my favourite anime subgenres is the villainess omote. Here is an excellent analysis as to why.

A wonderful time was had with people wearing antler horns and half-naked men and wonen clashing spears and shields on stage. Yes it was Heilung performing with Eivor as the opening act. Was saddened that I couldn't be amongst the people dancing amy more. Although they were quite subdued for most of the show, but then I'll try to dance to anything.

This is worth seeing live if you are in doubt.
