Going out Friday to Brillig was a bad idea, but I managed to crawl into Spiral Dance's launch of their new double CD Through A Sylvan Doorway. Quite good. I particularly enjoyed Asgard's Chase as well as old favourites Rise Up and Feet of Clay. I'd say more except I'm about to collapse in a heap of undifferentiated protoplasm.

Green naked people? Isn't that a Star Trek thing?

Well yes, green naked people is a Star Trek thing. Did you know when they were shooting The Menagerie (episode 1 of TOS), they got the rushes back and the Orion slave woman wasn't at all green. So they went with more vivid makeup. Still came back flesh-coloured. Then a production assistant followed up on this and discovered what was happening. Nobody had actually told the film lab that they were shooting a science fiction show and that the woman was supposed to be green. And one of the problems with film is that pink can come out as being green due to processing, so the lab was automatically colour-correcting the film, as they would for any other film showing this "artefact." Next rushes (and the final version), a perfect green woman.*

Actually it was a comment on the cover illustration of the CD (by Louise Hewitt), which is very green, and features a "nekkid man" on the cover (well, either a man wearing stag's antlers or actually Cernunnos**) and a nekkid Adrienne wandering through the forest on the inside. Some very nice touches in the fact that the interior forest is very English glade in style (although some of the plants are wrong***), whilst the cover, featuring the actual doorway, has some nice additions of Australian flora around the edges. The gum blossom and leaves sets it off quite nicely.

Must actually get around to listening to the CD. Probably when I stop coughing. Given the exhaustion from two gigs in three days (troublesome even before this bout of flu), and lending to much energy to someone (she was cute and had a stutter in her energy flow and I was trying to work out how to get her chi unblocked****), I'm pretty much kaputski. Can't remember that much of either gig, since I never got to sleep to permanently encode my memories. Whicj meant that all I could say to the violinist when she caught me shopping was "I liked Asgard's Chase." I can't tell you (or her) why though.

[* One of my favourite lines from Free Enterprise: "You got me a woman. And in my favourite colour too!" *****]

[** Looking closer it is Cernunnos, as there is no sign of the stag's hood. Personally I think the ambivalence would have been a much stronger image (especially looking in through the doorway), but there is also only so much detail you can add to a 3cm tall image. And the person who drew it probably doesn't think like that. Whereas ambiguity is very central to the Horned God mythos.]

[*** Bev must be rubbing off on me.]

[**** Not sure I didn't make actually it worse, since she doesn't know me well enough to really trust me, and it was very much connected with an overabundance of yang (which is actually the reverse of what it sounds like and therefore my being male probably didn't help much to soothe that problem). Definitely overstressed and holding herself much too rigid, which contributed to the stutter. Forgot to advise her to try some yoga or tai-chi since I probably won't see her again for a few months (if that). I admit I got too absorbed with trying to deal with the problem which was really too big for a simple solution, which means I was effectively exhausted before I began. And which probably needs actual acupuncture to solve properly (something I won't do), and not just manipulation of the pressure points.]

Ah the green/pink thing is interesting. I still remember those entry passes the physics department made with fairly early digital photography technology which made a certain gothic astrophysicist come out completely green!

And wasn't she happy that Wicked was still a decade (or two*) away...
