| Went to see Three Dollars on Tuesday at the Palace. This Australian film starring David Weinham is of the ultrarealism school and to my mind, cuts very close to the bone of the current Australian psyche. It was a good film, but you definitely don't feel happy and vibrant after seeing it. Be warned. However much of the depression was lifted by seeing Steamboy, the anime directed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, on Wednesday at the Mercury. Set in 1866 it is a great steam-powered epic concerning the philosophy of science, mad science, fun-fair carosels, and above all else, steam. Well worth seeing (it is also on Friday and Saturday). Also watch the closing credits carefully, as the Steamboy story continues behind them. And please, please, don't talk loudly over them, even if they are just titles. <sigh> Scarlett: "Simon! What is happening!" Simon: "It appears we are at war with Britain." Scarlett (considering): "Don't lose." |
