The interview meme game. If you want me to ask you five questions, just leave a comment and I'll get back to you as soon as inhumanly possible.

Here are the questions asked by [livejournal.com profile] freyaw:

1. Favourite meal that someone else cooks/cooked you. This can be a restaurant meal, something you remember eating once, whatever. It just has to be edible. And something that you can't do better.

The Nuar Pad Plik (beef in onion, pepper, and garlic) from the Thai place in the old Underground. Nobody has yet come close to producing it as perfectly and with the subtlety and blend of flavours. Of course it was spiced by conversation (and liar dice games) with friends, and a great staff that knew us all (I once complained to my friends that they hadn't managed to reach my chilli tolerance as yet and was overheard by said staff. The next time I ordered a chilli dish they sabotaged it; only I ate and enjoyed it, leaving the second "proper" dish they had prepared uneaten. What can I say, I was young and had taste buds back then).

If we are considering a complete meal, then for entree I have a soft spot for potato and leek soup, but it must be done perfectly (this definition of course includes freshly crushed black pepper). Very difficult to find a place that does a decent one; mostly they turn out like clag or are too watery; it must be made fresh. Especially with a fresh (straight from the oven) bagette and home-made butter during winter, with possibly a side of ham off the bone and kangaroo island triple cream camembert with peppercorns. Although I will settle for the occaisional potato and leek pie as a substitute (it's harder to go wrong making a pie than the correct balance of perfect soup).

In deserts, well, not many people did it better than the old Ruby's on Rundle Street. Kitschy 1950's diner decor but a menu that was heaven (and which changed every three weeks). Their deserts were invariably excellent. To get the equivalent these days I have to go to Chloes (with the appropriate increase in price tag).

Otherwise there is not much that I can't cook better (although I'm usually too lazy to do so). I generally only cook for others, and my kitchen these days is far too small to effectively have me hosting dinner parties. Besides I think that I promised to produce my famous roast camel recipe for my next intimate dinner party and am still needing to acquire another 293 complete dinner settings to sit all the guests

2. Have you heard... No I can't ask you that one, you might find out and spoil the surprise... Therefore I shall ask: Why is garlic not one of your interests?

Yes I have. Yes you can. Yes I did. And no it couldn't. Not without batteries, anyway.

Garlic is, in itself, quite interesting and good (not to mention yummy), but as an LJ interest it lacks a certain something. I mean, it has it's uses, both magical, medicinal and culinary, but outside of those applications, well... So I like it, but it is not a particular interest of mine, beyond my general interest in decent food and correcting people as to the nature of vampiric repulsification (traditionally it's the flower not the bulb, at least according to Greek and Egyptian antecedants).

3. If you had a backyard of a perfect size, climate, and soil type to grow one plant, and you didn't have to do anything to take care of it, what would you plant?

Yggsdrasil. Think big, I say. And if you can only grow one plant, it might as well be the one plant.

For a less mythological answer I don't really know. I tend to have a black thumb when it comes to plants and so I don't tend to keep any (contrary to popular belief I only enjoy killing things that have tried to kill me first). I like several varieties of the more exotic orchids, especially the very small wildflower ones with delicate colourings. Actually my liking of flowers is for the small wildflower ones in their natural settings, so I'd probably want to keep them there and discover them on walks in the country. Although I really really really enjoy berries of all sorts, so having a convenient source of blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries in my backyard would be yummy and would attract lots of birds

Although an Audrey II would be interesting too. "Feed me, Seymour!"

4. Will you do the Dagobah Swamp Monkey for me on Saturday?

I'm shocked! I thought you were in a long-term non-polyamorous relationship. And that you weren't interested in me in that way. (<sigh> <grin>) So doing it with you is not really a possibility. And even if you could find me a suitable willing partner with an exhibitionist streak before Saturday I'd probably feel uncomfortable about not being able to invite you to join in, so a command performance for you is probably out of the question.

The best I can possibly do is The Funky Gibbon. If you can get the band to play the song. (Although I do believe Nick is a Goodies fan...)

5. *poke* When was the last time you updated your website? *poke*

<ouch> April Fools Day 1996 (how appropriate, which is probably why I never really updated it since). Actually I should make arrangements to retire this web-page gracefully sometime since most of the information upon it has become highly apocryphal, to say the least. I have some fun ideas I want to try using CSS and some cool stuff that wasn't invented when I first started doing web stuff (my original web-page was far older as there was no such things as tables when it was done). I did have a page in arch where I experimented with stuff, including a totally virtual web-page which had no actual existence (including the images used); and then someone invented php which religated this idea to the scrap heap of history.

I do want to try the Lexicon Game at some point which means that I'll need to have an active wiki site (as well as a dozen players willing to consider the theme of the game). And think of an appropriate theme. Hmmmmm. I may be able to get arch to allow me to experiment as part of their web-media courses (to see if it possible to get it to work), just as they want me to play with level design in Unreal Tournament for their masters in digital design course. Even now, I can see a whole lab of people doing "research" in the lab at all hours. With their friends.

And <ouch>

And here are the answers for [livejournal.com profile] enkorvaks (I keep wanting to call him Ensign Korvaks for some reason...):

1. Who are your favourite music/singing groups, and why?

My taste in music is wide-ranging and varies incredibly by mood. I usually enjoy a song for either thematic reasons (it portrays an imagery that I like) or because of the complex and interchanging rythyms of the music. I tend to favour more primitive forms of music (frex I really liked the drum-based theme to Battlestar Galactica) and in my opinion the violin is the second best instrument (after the human voice). The krummhorn and shawn are tied for worst, btw. With this disclaimer firmly in cheek and my faulty memory:

I like a capella groups. My favourites are Jelelah and The Idea of North at the moment. The Idea of North is well worth going to see live, as it is the energy and fun that they are having when they sing that empowers their gigs and shifts it beyond the magnificent and into the sublime.

I heavily favour female vocalists too. Cara Dillon was a magnificent singer from a Womadelaide or two ago who enchanted me, although my true Womadelaide enchantment belonged to the first live performance by Shiela Chandra who had about 100 of us completely enchanted at 2am on a drizzily raining morning. I like Kate Bush and Moloko too.

Laurie Anderson is a brilliant artist as well, although technically she didn't actually start to sing until late in her career as a musician. Her co-founder of Real World Studios is also a favourite of mine: Peter Gabriel. He likes experimenting both musically and thematically. Another composer I like is Mike Oldfield. Although he can't sing. But Sally's whispered comments in Platinum still send enjoyable shivers down my spine. In a more classical vein I like Michael Nyman's compositions, although many of them become very similiar over the years. If you have never done so, go see Prospero's Books and enjoy Nyman's stunning music to Greenaway's fantastic visuals.

Drifting into the more gothic forms of music I love Dead Can Dance and almost went to their recent reunion concert in Belfast. Although I think I'm a heretic since I enjoy the songs sung by Brendan Perry more than those sung by Lisa Gerrard. I'm currently exploring the german gothic music scene: L'ame Immortelle, Persephone, and Sopor Aeternus.

On the celtic scene there is, of course, Loreena McKennitt. Due to friends in Canada I was able to experience her stuff well before it was given a world-wide release on Warner Music. Enya and Clannad probably fit in here too. And then their is Maddy Prior and Steeleye Span.

Locally (as in Australia) I like Spiral Dance, Wendy Rule, and Hottentot Party.

And there is a lot of people whom I may like one or two songs of, or who haven't developed a sufficient repitoire to say that they are some of my favourites. I'm sure I've forgotten people (like Jon Anderson), and of course, I'm off to see Jethro Tull on Sunday...

2. what does "pavane" mean, anyway?

A slow, stately court dance of the 16th and 17th centuries, usually in duple meter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavane

The normal pavane set is two singles, followed by a double. The left pavane set is left, together; right, together; left, right, left, together. The right pavane set: is right, together; left, together; right, left, right, together. It may be done forwards, backwards, or sideways, and combinations of these steps mark the different dances. My favourite pavane is the SCA-invented Mon Schaft Pavane.

I make use of the name because it is a stately progressive (ie, it tends to "progress" or travel about the dance floor) dance. A "reverance" is the formal bow before (and after) a pavane. So it is effectively an invitation to come dance with me a while and see where we end up. An offer I make to anyone.

3. How many roads must a man walk down?

This is an easy question to answer after seeing the HHGTTG movie. 42. As stated in the film.

To answer properly however: one. You can only walk your own road, not that of any other person, and your journey's down the road changes you and you can never go back, no matter how hard you may wish to. And it is not the destination that is important, but rather the journey itself. Sometimes people can blaze a trail, or even lay down a paved ten-lane superhighway with wireless connection points; other times it's just you forging a path through the snow drifts or swinging hand to hand through the trees or digging through the dirt or holding for one last moment on that lonely cliff face, hoping you have the strength to climb another "step".

4. Do you think that these questions are worth 250 points?

Honestly? Not really. I was expecting more interesting questions. At least something to dull the tedium and ennui of existence, or probe my essential nature so I can discover something new too.

6. Green?

I'm feeling rather Muppetish today (and no, it doesn't mean Frank Oz has his hand in unspeakable places), so I'll say "It ain't easy being..."

Besides. Subtlety is always underappreciated.

Obviously no one wants me to ask them questions ... and I spent ages (well, several femptoseconds at a minimum) thinking up interesting questions for people.

Your questions await:

1. Every role-player has an incident in a game that they were involved in which they remember quite fondly. What was your favourite happening in a role-playing game?

2. Which of the Richard Bach's books did you enjoy the most and why?

3. You are an inhabitant of Imperial Rome. Who would you be and what would you do?

4. What, in your opinion, is John Taylor's mother supposed to represent to The Nightside?

5. Every role-player has an incident in a game that they were involved in which was highly embarrassing to them or their character (but probably made everyone else laugh - or at least snicker loudly). Spill the beans and tell us of your most embarrassing moment in roleplaying.

6. [For bonus kudos and US$1,000,000] Can all positive even integers greater than or equal to 4 be calculated as the sum of two primes? Prove it.

You probably don't have to answer the last question unless you really want to...
