Date: 2010-06-30 05:37 am (UTC)Sorry to disappoint, but from the publicity shots Conan is a blonde surfer dude, albeit with less of a steroid abuse problem than Arnie.
The problem is Hollywood looks to itself for reference, and rarely returns to the source material. The stereotype that Conan is an overmuscled-thug who punches out camels is too buried in the Hollywood zeitgeist.
I mean, look what they did with Solomon Kane. I'd cry, except I expected it. The subtlety of the Solomon Kane stories doesn't really translate well onto the screen. Although I think Hammer might have given it a good go, since I believe the proposed series Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter (of which only the movie pilot exists), was based somewhat on the characterisation of Solomon Kane.
I just hope that no one ever gets the opportunity to make an adaption of Karl Edward Wagner's Kane series. I think that would be a complete travesty. Besides, the old pulp stories are designed to be serials, not individual movies.

Date: 2010-07-01 12:27 am (UTC)I am vaguely encouraged by the fact that it's Jason Momoa playing Conan; I liked him in SG: Atlantis *shrug* But it really does nothing to capture him as the cunning thief and tactician...muscles alone could never explain how he did so well.
And as for Solomon Kane; yeah, it screwed the faithful adaptation, but the opening scene was taken straight out of my head from a game I'm in, so I found myself thinking of it as a really bizarre Alt-History for my mage.
We are doomed, I think, to be dissatisfied until the tech appears to convert wishful thinking into movies in your own home.
