A Dirty World is Greg Stolze's rules for roleplaying in the world of film noir. It is interesting in that it has no real skills or characteristics, but instead describes a character in terms of various opposed traits (termed identities and qualities). For example a characters physical traits are generally described by the opposed identities of Vigor and Grace and a number of accompanying opposed qualities, such as Courage/Wrath and Endurance/Defiance.

In order to accomplish something, a character will generally use an identity and a quality. For example, to drive at dangerous speed during a rainstorm might call for a test of Graceful Endurance, whilst to threaten someone to make them talk requires Persuasive Corruption. This identity/quality pair determines the number of dice that a character rolls to perform the test (the system uses the One Roll Engine of Godlike, Reign, Wild Talents, Monsters and Other Childish Things, and This Favoured Land to resolve contests, so the more dice you roll the better your chance of getting a valid set, and thus being successful).

The interesting part in the game is that these attributes are not static during play. They can be raised by appropriate actions (stealing from someone who trusts you raises your selfishness, for example), and are also the target for conflicts. Trying to seduce a married woman? Attack her Purity with your Persuasive Corruption, whilst she resists with her Understanding Purity to remain oblivious to your advances. Failure may cause you to shift or lose your own Corruption, as you are forced to examine your own motives. Thus success is not just measured in accomplishment, but in the effects on oneself and others. A subtle effect, but I believe it captures much of the emotional baggage and interplay of the true film noir. And this has the advantage that if you don't feel up to facing the Big Bad yet, then you can engineer situations to increase your likelihood of success. So it actually gives a game mechanical boost to, say, roughing up the henchmen to find the boss's secret headquarters, in addition to actually obtaining the information that you require.

Overall, quite an interesting small (it's only 70 quarto pages) game in a genre that I'm thoroughly out of practice with.
