Whilst perusing a post on the mechanics underlying games, I couldn't help thinking what an interesting thing it would be to have an index of game mechanics (in this case resolution systems) just to look at the number of different ways people have found to resolve stuff, and organizing them into families.

For example:

The Fantasy Trip (Melees, Wizard, In The Labyrinth) [Metagaming]
Success: Roll 3d6 and get less than or equal to the appropriate core attribute.
Difficulty: Increase the number of d6 rolled by an appropriate amount.

Which belongs to the same school of thought as, say:

Tales of the Floating Vagabond [Avalon Hill]
Success: Roll a dice and get less than or equal to appropriate core ability.
Difficulty: Alters size of die rolled – 1d3 to 1d100.

At last something to do with the wall of game books (apart from inspiring fear in those under it). The question is, how much detail to put into it.
