I read the first of Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series because of its character's cameo appearence in Wm. Mark Simmons Dead Easy, where it kept august company with such luminaries as Harry Dresden, Anita Blake, and Sookie Sackhouse. Unfortuneately I found it rather ordinary, both in style and plot. Noticing the sixth book in the series at a bargain basement price in the second-hand book store, I did something I rarely do and read it to see if the series had improved (normally I'd shelve it and wait until I filled the gap, compulsive collector that I am). Nope. Marginally better writing, but no real improvement in plot or characterisation. Not that it's bad, per se; its just ... ordinary. |
