It is definitely a fan movie, with lots of fan references, but I don't think it really compares with Buckaroo Banzai.
I mean any production that discovers that it was essentially being used purely as a money-laundering opportunity by organised crime and so then ends the movie with "Coming Soon: Buckaroo Banzai versus The World Crime League" has a certain cachet that is difficult to match.
Actually it's interesting to note that BB was considered a dismal failure as a property because of it's cinema-takings. However in an audit it was discovered exactly how many videos (and later DVDs) were being sold of it, and it was sufficient to make the people at Fox investigate whether it would be useful to create an official Blue Blaze Irregulars fan club as the first step in ressurecting the property. Unfortunately this was pre-WWW so it was difficult to get the information out and the project died.
Still, the BB RPG is due out later this year.
[I will admit to singing "Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles..." after coming out of the movie. Does this make me a bad man?]
