[FRINGE] scheduling

My schedule for February and March has firmed up a lot more. Remember that the Garden opens on the 11th of February (a week earlier than the Fringe itself). [Events in italics are not official Fringe events.] | |
Sat 5 Feb 7:30pm | Spiral Dance & Brillig at the Singing Gallery Spiral Dance & Brillig at the Singing Gallery in McLaren Vale. Should be lots of fun, even though there is unlikely to be much in the way of dancing (the venue is not set up for it). {There was lots of dancing to the amazement of Brillig. Just not for them.] [****+]
Fri 11 Feb 5:00pm | Songs To Make You Smile The delightful Lili La Scala returns to the Speigeltent to sing some of her favourite vintage comedy songs. I quite enjoyed her War Songs Tribute last year. And she can sing well enough to make Puccini worth listening to. [*****]
Fri 11 Feb 8:00pm | Swamp Juice Canadian puppeteer Jeff Achtem's (Sticks Stones & Broken Bones) new show, taking his shadow puppets to an entirely new dimension.[*****]
Sun 13 Feb | [No Fringe For Me] Due to acute pain and nausea...
Tue 15 Feb 8:45pm | Sammy J & Randy in Bin Night Musical comedian Sammy J and Heath McIvor's favourite puppet, Randy, return to La Cascadeur to retell more events of the share house on Ricketts Lane once more.[****]
Wed 16 Feb 7:00pm | Niets is echt moeilijk (Nothing is really difficult). The physical comedy trio of Theatergroep WAK have built a giant wooden box in the Garden. What does it contain? [***]
Wed 16 Feb 8:15pm | Le Gateau Chocolat He's Nigerian, on the plus size, hairy, and wears lycra. But he can sing. And his goal is to make the audience forget themselves for a while and be happy. [Although he does seem to have a beard fetish...][****+]
Wed 16 Feb 10:00pm | Dirk Darrow NCSSI Magician/comedian Tim Motley presents an excellent show as his character, Dirk Darrow, a down-at-the-heels film noir private dick from 1947, tries to solve a murder, with the able assistance of the audience lured their by cunning manipulation and cheap advertising.[*****]
Sun 20 Feb 8:00pm | Aluka at the Grace A capella group Aluka, two-thirds of whom are the backing singers of Clare Bowditch, will be doing a free gig at the Grace Emily. They were quite good when they opend for Clare the last time she was here (despite being in a venue not forgiving to a cappella performers and facing a hostile and disinterested crowd. Should be good to hear them with only a minor background clatter of glasses and crowd noise.
Mon 21 Feb 7:00pm | 2 Faces of Shakespeare: Richard III An alternate Richard the III with a villianess. [This is tentative at the moment as I have Aluka the evening before and will probably have to hunt down people at O'Week during the day and I'm really unsure of my endurance. So far it takes at least a day to recover from each Fringe expedition).]
Tue 22 Feb | [TBA] Possibly dinner with friends before they go see Spaceship Man. Maybe I'll join them for the show. Maybe not. Depends how I feel.
Fri 25 Feb 8:00pm | Sound & Fury's Spaceship Man Richard returns to AC Arts on Light Square with two new sidekicks to present his latest Sci Fi masterpiece. And get eaten by the alien hiding behind the rock.
Tue 1 Mar 7:00pm | Reign of Assassins The new John Woo film, starring Michelle Yeoh. Part of the Adelaide Film Festival (why, oh why, do we have to have 5 or 6 major Arts events in the same two months. <sigh>
Thu 3 Mar 7:00pm | The Scared Weird Little Guys - Enough The SWLG appear to be the big musical comedy group* of this year's Fringe. Oh well. I suppose we will have to put up with them. What's the bet that they play South Australia on Whistlepops. [As opposed to comedy musical group which would be The Axis of Awesome.
Sat 5 Mar | Bygone Error and Friends A night of traditional vaudevillean music hall by those maniacal masters of mirth, ably accompanied by a selection of their friends at the Folk Centre.
Tue 8 Mar 10:00pm | The Twoks Xani and whoever her percussionist will be this year play their only Adelaide gig at the Speigeltent. Previously very avante garde, her latest efforts involving intricately looped violins are moving much more mainstream, helped by the fact that she's quite a good vocalist as well.
Thu 10 Mar | [TBA]
Sat 12 Mar 8:00pm | Ballads By Candlelight Famed a capella group The Idea of North are once more filling St Peter's Cathedral to beyond capacity. Last time they used no amplifications save the natural acoustics of the church and the crowd was stunned silent.
Sat 19 Mar ???? | Brillig's Last Gig Brillig's last gig (for a while) is at the Folk Centre in Thebarton, as they are going into seclusion to write lots of songs for their new album. Hmmm. This venue has dancing room. Now all I have to do is encourage people to attend who are willing to dance a good old-fashioned ho-down. At least, dancers who are older than their normal dancers (who average age 4).

I still have a few other shows that I have to fit in. For example I'm definitely going to go see Axis of Awesome, probably on the 1st or 5th of March. Probably because I want to reinfect my ears with Bird-Plane for another four weeks. The Idea of North's Australian Spirit show with Will Barton on the 11th of March is tempting. Not to mention seeing Shelby in Max & Dagger and the Georgie Aue quartet. I don't feel up to putting together Steampunk gear so I shall be missing the sailing of the Olympia. Besides, I keep meaning to order a new pith helmet and keep forgetting. Although I actually do have a tendency to favour the Colonial American Steampunk style than the Victoriana European one. But that means getting a new coat and repairing my lace cravats. Then if I have money left I might take a look at some of the smaller companies and events I haven't previously seen. But unless someone else is willing to go with me, I'm not really that enthused. Half the fun is critiquing the show afterwards. [So if there are any other things people want to see, please mention them.] Although there is always the chance of incidental cabaret shows, which are fun (but usually happen at the end of the night) |
